Questions about Love You, Bye!? The answers are below. If you're still stuck, email us; we read every message.
Getting started
- What do I need?
- An iPhone with iOS 27 or later. Love You, Bye! is designed for iPhone Duo, and it plays on every other iPhone with an on-screen flip phone.
- How do I start?
- The first time, open the app with the phone closed: the outside screen boots and Mom rings within a few seconds. After that, tap the outside screen to start the next day.
- Are these real phone calls?
- No. Every call is made up and plays inside the game. The app never makes, receives or shows real calls, never rings when it's closed, and never touches your contacts or your phone number.
- Does it cost anything inside the app?
- No. There are no in-app purchases, ads or subscriptions, and no account.
One call, step by step
- The closed phone rings, and the outside screen shows who's calling and how many rings are left.
- Open the phone to answer. The caller's words appear in speech bubbles, a syllable at a time, with a made-up babbling voice.
- Close the phone to hang up. What counts is the moment you start to close, so a gentle close is judged the same as a quick one.
- The outside screen shows how it went: stars for a good hang-up, or a stamp such as RUDE with the words you cut off.
Each caller has an unwritten rule for when it's polite (or satisfying) to hang up. You learn it by getting it wrong, and getting it wrong has consequences: Mom calls straight back, Jamie texts "k.", the Boss docks your pay, and missed calls leave voicemails.
If you open the phone when nobody is calling, the day pauses. Close it to carry on, or choose QUIT DAY.
The callers (spoilers)
Want to work them out yourself? Skip this section.
- Mom
- Wait for "Love you, bye!" She often sounds like she's finishing before she is, and there's always one more thing.
- The Boss
- Answer quickly, and hang up only after "That's all."
- Dad
- He's calling with a joke. Hang up after the punchline, before he starts explaining it.
- Jamie
- Never hang up first. Wait until Jamie hangs up and you hear the line go dead.
- The 1-800 number
- Hang up as fast as you can.
- The bank
- Press the key it asks for, then wait for "Goodbye." Look carefully at the caller ID: the bank doesn't always look like the bank.
Call waiting
- What's call waiting?
- From Wednesday, a second caller can beep in while you're on a call. The call screen shows a blinking LINE 2 chip, and the HOLD key lights up.
- How do I switch lines?
- On iPhone Duo, half-close the phone (like a book, or like a laptop on a desk) and hold it there for a moment. The switchboard shows one line on each half, and the caller on hold hears hold music. Open the phone fully to go back to the active call. You can also press HOLD on the keypad.
- What happens to the caller on hold?
- They wait, but not forever. If you hang up on the active call, the caller on hold rings straight back.
The week and the phone bill
- How long is a day?
- A few minutes. Monday has 6 calls and each day adds a new caller, up to 11 calls on Friday. After Friday, the week starts again with remixed lines.
- What's the phone bill?
- At the end of each day, the outside screen prints an itemised bill: every call with its last words and its stars, a few comic tallies, and a grade from A+ to F. Then open the phone to play any voicemails.
- How is the grade worked out?
- From the stars you earned out of the most you could have earned that day: A+ at 95% or more, A at 85%, B at 72%, C at 58%, D at 45%, otherwise F. The other numbers on the bill are just for fun.
Playing on iPhone Duo
The phone itself is the flip phone. You never need to fold fast or hard, and you never hold a pose for longer than a call.
| Pose | What it does in Love You, Bye! |
|---|---|
| Closed (outer display) | The caller ID: who's ringing, missed calls, Jamie's texts, voicemail lights and the phone bill. Closing during a call hangs up. |
| Open, held tall (inner display) | The classic flip phone: the call screen above the crease and the keypad below. Opening while it rings answers. |
| Open, held wide (inner display) | The same call, with the screen on one side and the keypad on the other. |
| Partly folded (book or laptop) | The switchboard, when a second call is waiting: hold it half-closed for a moment to switch lines. Opening part way from closed on a desk also answers. |
| Tent | Not used. The phone counts as closed. |
- Does it matter how fast I close the phone?
- No. The game judges the moment you start closing, so a slow, gentle close scores the same as a fast one.
- Can I play on iPhone Duo without folding?
- Yes. Turn on On-screen lid in Settings to get on-screen keys to answer, hang up and switch lines.
Playing on other iPhones
- My iPhone doesn't fold. Can I still play?
- Yes. It's the same game, with the same callers, rules and timing. The screen shows the flip phone.
- How do I answer and hang up?
- Tap the lid (or swipe up on it) to open the phone and answer. Swipe down on the top half of the screen, or press END, to close it and hang up. Press HOLD to switch lines during call waiting.
- Does it run on iPad?
- It's an iPhone game. If your iPad runs iPhone apps, it plays there with the on-screen flip phone too.
Settings
Press the envelope key on the keypad, or choose SET in the menu, to open Settings. You can turn Sound, Play sound in Silent Mode and Haptics on or off, and turn on Slow talk, Relaxed timing and the On-screen lid. The tortoise switch on the menu and the pause screen also sets the talk speed.
- The callers talk too fast.
- Turn on Slow talk: every caller speaks 1.5 times slower and every timing window widens. Relaxed timing doubles the windows and adds rings. If you miss a caller a few times, the settings tile on the menu pulses to offer it.
- I can't hear anything.
- Check that Sound is on and your iPhone's volume is up. On a silenced iPhone the game stays quiet unless Play sound in Silent Mode is on. The callers' words are always on screen, so it also plays with the sound off.
Accessibility and comfort
- Reading: the callers' words are always on screen, and Slow talk gives you more time to read them.
- Timing: Relaxed timing doubles every window.
- Playing without folding: turn on On-screen lid in Settings.
- Comfort: about 6 to 11 gentle opens and closes a day, and no pose is held longer than a call.
- Language: the calls are in English.
If anything in Love You, Bye! doesn't work well with the accessibility settings you use, please tell us.
Progress, backups and a new iPhone
- Where is my progress saved?
- On your iPhone, inside Love You, Bye!: which day is next, your grades and bills, the callers you've met and your settings. It isn't synced between devices.
- Will it move to a new iPhone?
- Yes, if you restore your iPhone or iCloud backup to the new iPhone. App data is included in your own backups. We never receive it.
